Through the development of this project, large standing stone inspired space dividers were created to reflect the beauty of Orkney whilst incorporating the damaging physical effects which climate change is having on the island, serving as a preventative approach targeted at tourists and passengers on board the MV Hamnavoe ferry.

This collection confronts the issue of historical preservation, visualised as interior-based, to spark excitement around the journey passengers make, immersing them visually through a sense of beauty, history and culture which Orkney has to offer, whilst serving as a visual tool to educate, prevent and draw attention to the underlying issue of climate change and loss.

These space dividers, inspired by the ring of Brodgar, are covered in hand and digitally printed fabrics, which represent the effects erosion is having on Orkney’s coastlines and historical sites alike. By using marks extracted on-site and brought to life through pattern and colour, they bring part of what Orkney has to offer on board whilst acting as a preventative approach to the harrowing effects tourism can have on these historic landmarks and landscapes. These space dividers act functionally and as a ‘tourism from home’ statement approach, offering both an aesthetic and ethical alternative to traditional tourism and textile consumption.

Each ‘stone’ is ‘double-sided’, with a different patterned cloth on either side. All stones were inspired directly by the shapes of the stones located at the ring of Brodgar.
